History

The 3^rdDivision draws its origins from the famous 3^rd Algerian Infantry Division (3e DIA), formed in 1943 and a key protagonist in the liberation of Marseille during World War II.

After the war, the unit was reconstituted in 1951 as an armored division in Germany before being disbanded in 1991 at the end of the Cold War.

It was officially recreated on June 20, 2016, with its headquarters in Marseille, directly reconnecting with its glorious historical traditions.

Mission

The division is a combined-arms unit ready for immediate deployment, capable of operating in high-intensity environments both on national territory and in international theaters.

It currently serves as the "World Division," with strategic responsibility covering areas such as Africa, the Indo-Pacific, and the Middle East.

Furthermore, as the 1^stof July 2026, the 3^rd Division is tasked with commanding the land component of NATO's Allied Reaction Force (ARF).

Role

The 3^rd Division constitutes one of the French Army's operational pillars, acting as an element of power projection and deterrence.

It ensures the operational readiness of its subordinate units, guaranteeing the ability to deploy forces rapidly to address crises of various kinds.

Organization

The unit is based in Marseille and coordinates approximately 34,000 soldiers, organized into three specialized brigades that include a variety of operational regiments.

These brigades are the 2^nd Armored Brigade (firepower), the 6^th Light Armored Brigade (amphibious operations), and the 11^th Parachute Brigade (immediate deployment).

The overall structure also includes training centers and specialized schools, ensuring a robust and versatile chain of command for every type of mission.
