NRDC-ITA hosted an informative lecture on the evolution of Daesh, from its origins in the Iraqi and Syrian civil wars, to its spread to Africa and wider Asia

Prof. Marco Lombardi, from the Italian Team for Security, Terrorism Issues & Managing Emergencies (www.itstime.it) gave a lecture on the evolution of Daesh to key staff from NRDC-ITA. ITSTIME is a research center of Department of Sociology of the “Cattolica” University of Sacred Heart in Milan, composed of experts from different fields and competences.

The NATO HQ has a formal agreement with 6 elite Italian universities with the aim of exchanging expertise and increasing mutual understanding. The topic of Daesh’s migration from Syria and Iraq and its evolution from a centralised proto-state to a decentralised terror focused insurgency, are clear examples where military commanders can learn from academics.

These were the subjects of this important lecture, with time made available at the end for questions from attendees. The NATO alliance has been at the forefront of the global fight against terrorism, with continued effort ongoing in Iraq and across the region. The migration of Daesh into North Africa has seen the emergence of a threat from the strategic direction south, with NATO establishing the Southern Hub (www.thesouthernhub.org) as a means of mitigating this.

Having recently completed its turn as Land Component Command within the NATO Response Force HQ, NRDC-ITA is now fully engaged in the process of realigning itself as a war fighting corps HQ.

However, in order that his staff are fully engaged in the issues across a wide spectrum of military problems, Lt Gen Perretti, COM NRDC-ITA, is keen to ensure a full program of professional development continues.

The Milan based Command is constantly looking to educate and improve as well as learning from outside experts. In doing so it remains able to adapt an agile decision making process, to whatever direction the threat to the Alliance presents itself from.
