The Allied Reaction Force at the core of NATO readiness, innovation and interoperability effortsOn 22 May, the Italian Undersecretary of State for Defence, Isabella Rauti, visited NATO Rapid Deployable Corps Italy (NRDC-ITA) Headquarters in Solbiate Olona, where she was welcomed by the Commander of NRDC-ITA and by the Senior National Representatives of the 19 Allied Nations contributing personnel to the multinational Headquarters.
During the visit, the Undersecretary received a comprehensive briefing on the strategic role currently performed by NRDC-ITA within the Alliance, with particular emphasis on the Headquarters assuming the role of Allied Reaction Force (ARF). The ARF represents NATO’s highly ready force under the authority of the Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR), the Alliance’s highest military authority in Europe.
The briefing highlighted the SACEUR’s strategic intent to maximize human and technological resources across the Alliance, ensuring forces that are interoperable, credible, modern and ready to address current and emerging security challenges, thereby contributing to NATO’s deterrence and collective defence posture.
Within this framework, the Allied Reaction Force constitutes a key strategic instrument for NATO, designed to operate across a multidomain environment by integrating and orchestrating land, maritime, air, cyber, space and special operations capabilities. As ARF Headquarters, NRDC-ITA continuously conducts planning, concept development, experimentation and operational preparation activities aimed at enhancing force effectiveness, responsiveness and readiness, while leveraging innovation, adaptability and lessons identified from current operational environments.
Particular attention during the briefing was devoted to force standardization and readiness, pursued through an extensive programme of mission rehearsals and training activities designed to validate potential ARF employment options. In this context, in February the Headquarters and its components participated in Exercise “Steadfast Dart”, a live Article 5 scenario exercise aimed at testing the rapid deployment capability of the ARF as well as multinational and multidomain force integration.
In May, the ARF also took part in Exercise “Steadfast Deterrence”, conducted in a pre-Article 5 CPX/CAX scenario with the purpose of validating the command and control architecture at both strategic and operational levels, while further testing the role and capabilities of NATO’s high-readiness force.
The briefing also underlined how the Allied Reaction Force serves today as a catalyst for the modernization and standardization of national capabilities, strengthening interoperability, readiness and integration among Allied forces in support of the Alliance’s collective security objectives.
NRDC-ITA further represents a strategic link between NATO and the Italian Armed Forces, facilitating cooperation, integration and innovation processes that contribute to the evolution of military capabilities within a multinational and joint environment.
At the conclusion of the visit, Undersecretary of State for Defence Isabella Rauti expressed her appreciation for the daily commitment and professionalism demonstrated by the Italian and international personnel serving at NRDC-ITA, reaffirming the importance of continued investment in the Headquarters as a force multiplier and a center of excellence within NATO, while also highlighting Italy’s leadership role within the Alliance.
