102 UK Operational Sustainment Brigade

The 102 Operational Sustainment Brigade, a logistic unit of the British Army, is a light and agile force responsible for transporting troops and equipment to the battlefield and providing logistical support to combat units.

History

The 102 Operational Sustainment Brigade traces its origins back to the 102 Beach Sub-Area, Normandy, France, established in late 1943 to manage logistic support operations across Juno Beach during World War II. After the Mulberry artificial harbors became operational, the Beach Groups were no longer needed and dispersed to their original Lines of Communication roles. In 1993, 50 years after the formation of the 102nd Beach Sub-Area, Headquarters Combat Service Support Group (Germany) was established in Gütersloh, Germany. In July 1999, the formation was renamed 102nd Logistic Brigade and adopted the Halberd as its official tactical recognition flash in October of the same year.

Mission

The 102 Logistic Brigade is prepared to deploy trained force elements, including the Brigade Headquarters, worldwide, within Readiness to Deploy in order to support 1st (UK) Division’s military contribution to a national, NATO, or multi-national force. It is part of the 1st UK Division.

Role

As part of the Adaptable Force HQ, the 102 Logistic Brigade provides a light, agile force designed, in war, to receive both troops and equipment into the theatre of operations, organize their forward movement to the battle area along a line of communication of up to 750 km, then logistically sustain the fighting formations and finally redeploy the force back to the UK base or on to subsequent operations. The Brigade is also responsible for setting up field hospitals and the evacuation of casualties from the theatre. This description understates the role, which involves complex logistic processes and requires a detailed plan for ammunition, fuel, transport, prisoners of war, humanitarian assistance, rear area security, and medical operations.
